Moving your wine collection can feel challenging but it doesn’t have to be. With the right preparation and tools, you can move your bottles safely and without damage. No matter how big or small your collection is, shipping wine can be easy and worry-free if you follow a few helpful tips.
Get Your Wine Valued
Before you move your wine collection, find out how much it’s worth. This helps you get proper compensation if anything gets damaged during the move. If you’re not sure where to get an appraisal, ask your local wine shop or distributor for a trusted recommendation.
Get the Right Packing Supplies
If you’re on a budget, you can wrap your wine bottles in paper or bubble wrap, place them in sturdy boxes, and fill the empty spaces with extra paper. But if you can, use wine boxes made specifically for shipping bottles — they’re designed to protect your wine and make the moving process much easier.
Finish Open Bottles
Don’t pack any opened wine bottles, as they can spill during the move. It’s best to drink or use up any open bottles before you start packing.
Check the Corks
Before packing, make sure every bottle’s cork is secure and won’t come loose during the move. If you’re worried about leaks, you can use cork cages to keep them extra safe.
Strengthen the Bottom of the Boxes
If you think your boxes might not be strong enough, place two or three extra layers of cardboard at the bottom before packing your bottles. After that, use extra tape to make sure the boxes are secure.
Avoid Storing Bottles Upright
Corks need to stay moist which is why wine bottles are usually kept on their sides. When you pack them for shipping, place corked bottles sideways or with the cork facing down to keep them in good condition.
Watch the Temperature
Wine stays in the best condition at around 55°F. If you’re moving a small collection, use your own vehicle to keep it cool. For larger collections, it’s better to use a climate-controlled van to protect the wine from heat or cold.
Check State Rules
Before moving, contact the alcohol control authorities in your new state. Ask if you’re allowed to bring wine with you and find out if there are any specific laws or restrictions you need to follow.
Shipping your wine collection can be easy and stress-free if you follow these simple steps.
