10 Organizing Tips that Will Speed Up Unpacking

10 organizing tips that will speed up unpacking

Moving can be exhausting — between packing, finding a moving company, selling your old place, searching for a new one and handling everything else in between. And once you finally arrive at your new home, the job isn’t done yet — you still have to unpack. Here are 10 easy organizing tips to make the unpacking process quicker and less stressful:

  • The way you pack will make a big difference in how quickly you can unpack later. As you pack, separate your things into three groups – items to keep, items to donate or sell, and items to throw away. Bring only the things you truly need or love. This will make unpacking much faster and easier. Moving is the perfect chance to clear out the clutter.
  • To make the first couple of days in your new home easier, pack a personal bag for each family member. Include essentials like toiletries, a few changes of clothes, snacks, necessary medicines and other items you might need right away without digging through boxes. Keep these bags with you in the car or carry them if you’re traveling by plane.
  • Just like you organize your packing before the move, it’s helpful to plan your unpacking too. Divide the work into smaller tasks and spread them over a few days. This will make the process easier and less overwhelming.
  • While packing, label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to in your new home. When you unload, put every box directly in the right room. This will make unpacking much easier.
  • In each room, start by unpacking the things you use most often and put them in their proper place.
  • If unpacking the whole house feels like too much, focus on finishing one room completely before moving on to the next.
  • Before you start unpacking in each room, decide where the furniture and other items will go so you can place them right away.
  • In the kitchen, begin by setting up the main appliances. Then unpack your food and arrange it in the pantry so it’s easy to find when you need it.
  • On the first day, assemble the beds and put on the sheets. After a long day, you’ll be thankful to have a comfortable place to rest and sleep.
  • As soon as you arrive, hang the shower curtains and unpack your toiletries and towels. After a long day of moving, a refreshing shower will feel amazing.
