How to Pack Glasses for Moving

Moving to a new home can be exciting but packing fragile items like glasses requires extra care. Glasses are delicate and can easily break during a move if not packed properly. To help you keep them safe, here’s a guide to packing glasses for moving.

What You’ll Need

Before you start, gather these materials:

  • Sturdy cardboard boxes: Choose boxes with strong walls or specially designed dish-pack boxes.
  • Packing paper or newspaper: Soft material to wrap your glasses.
  • Bubble wrap: For extra protection.
  • Dividers: Cardboard dividers can prevent glasses from bumping into each other.
  • Tape: High-quality packing tape to seal the boxes.
  • Marker: To label your boxes as “FRAGILE.”

Instructions

1. Prepare Your Box

Start by lining the bottom of the box with a thick layer of crumpled packing paper or bubble wrap. This creates a cushion to absorb shocks during transit.

2. Wrap Each Glass

  • Take a piece of packing paper and place a glass at one corner.
  • Roll the glass in the paper, tucking the edges into the glass as you go.
  • For extra protection, wrap a layer of bubble wrap over the paper.

3. Add Dividers

Insert cardboard dividers into the box if you have them. They help keep glasses separate and reduce the chances of breakage.

4. Pack the Glasses Upright

  • Place the glasses in the box upright (like how they stand on a table). Avoid laying them flat, as they’re more likely to break that way.
  • If you’re not using dividers, leave enough space between each glass and fill the gaps with crumpled paper or bubble wrap.

5. Layer the Box

  • If the box is tall enough for more than one layer, add a cushion of packing paper between layers.
  • Repeat the process for each layer, ensuring each one is secure and separated by padding.

6. Fill Empty Spaces

Once all glasses are packed fill any remaining gaps in the box with crumpled paper or bubble wrap. This prevents the glasses from shifting during the move.

7. Seal the Box

Close the box and tape it securely on all sides. Shake the box gently to check if anything moves inside. If you hear movement add more padding.

8. Label the Box

  • Use a marker to label the box as “FRAGILE” and “GLASSES – HANDLE WITH CARE.”
  • Write This Side Up on the box to ensure your partnered professional movers place it correctly.

Tips for Packing Glasses

  • Avoid overpacking: Overloading the box can increase the risk of glasses breaking.
  • Use smaller boxes for heavy glasses: Heavier items are easier to manage in smaller boxes.
  • Pack expensive glassware separately: For wine glasses or crystal, use extra bubble wrap and consider using specialty boxes.
  • Move the box yourself: If possible, transport fragile items like glasses in your car to ensure extra care.

In The End

Packing glasses for a move doesn’t have to be stressful if you follow these steps. The key is to use plenty of padding, pack them upright and seal the box securely. By labeling the box and handling it carefully, you can ensure your glasses arrive at your new home in one piece.

Happy moving!
